By David HoggardThe story of how a yacht-builder and yacht-owner became a billionaire is a tale of how one man’s ambition has transformed the world.
From the start, Mr Donaldson was determined to make money.
“I was going to do this for the next five years, I was going out and I was getting really good,” he told ABC Radio.
“If I was not getting money I was at least making a lot of money.
I was just determined that I was the best, I would do this, I could get this done.”
It wasn’t easy, however.
After the birth of his second child, in 1997, Mr Trump started receiving calls from people all over the world wanting to hire him.
“All the calls I got, people wanted to hire me,” he said.
“They had people from around the world coming and telling me that they wanted to do the business, that they were willing to do it.”
Mr Trump, who is still married to Ivana Trump, started building his yacht, which he named “Trump City”.
“I started thinking, well, if I’m going to be building this yacht, then I should be the one doing the business,” he explained.
“The idea was to build a business and I would make a good living, I’d make a lot, and I could do it without having to get a degree in engineering or finance.”‘
I thought this is going to make a huge amount of money’When he got to the US, Mr Trumps first job was at a yacht yard, but it didn’t last long.
“It was a very stressful time, and it was just a really bad job,” he admitted.
“You have to be really, really, very careful with your language.”
He was sacked after a few months and hired another job in New York City, where he was hired by the famous yacht club the Ocean Reef Club.
“We had a big pool of clients, and one of the things they asked us to do was to come up and play golf with them,” he recalled.
“And we’d be on the course, we’d have to walk around the course for a few minutes, and they’d come over and say, ‘I don’t understand how you’re doing this’.”
Mr Trump’s passion for sailing and sailing lessons was a huge help in getting his business started, but his passion for boats was not a problem.
“People would ask me, ‘Do you want to be on a boat?’
And I’d say, yeah, I like boats.
I like sailing.
I’d go sailing.
And it just sort of snowballed,” he laughed.
The club was also interested in a business opportunity and Mr Trump was offered a $100,000 job as a yacht captain.
“There was a lot that was going on that I didn’t understand,” he remembered.
“So I was like, ‘You know what, you’re the boss, you can do whatever you want.
It’s your business.'”
He was very proud of himself, he was very happy.
So that’s how we got started.
“The Ocean Reef club was a success, with Mr Trumpys yacht eventually becoming the world’s biggest yacht, but Mr Trump had other plans.”
In 1998, I had a real hard time in New Jersey,” he recounted.”
Everything was so bad.
I couldn’t sleep, I couldn
